Resident teams working to change the area surrounding the Market-Euclid intersection envision their "village center" as a landmark cultural destination built on the extraordinary multicultural strength of the community and planned, designed, built, managed, serviced, and owned by the community.
The first phase of The Village, Market Creek Plaza, is a high-impact anchor project in an area once known for its severe blight. Its resident teams and community ownership structures laid the foundation for large-scale joint action and fostered the momentum for reclaiming over 45 acres of unproductive land in a way that:
- builds resident leadership
- creates strong networks in health, education, family support, and public safety
- brings essential services
- creates jobs and expands contracting opportunities
- fosters environmental sustainability and promotes healthy and safe lifestyles
- builds cross-cultural and cross-generational understanding
- promotes regional equity and the resident ownership of assets
To focus strategic joint action, action planning efforts are concentrated within a half-mile radius of the Market-Euclid intersection. Approximately 45 acres of blight targeted by residents have been acquired and are being held in trust as community assets. Acquisition of land is continuing as resources are available.
While this is the "heart" of The Village, planning efforts will also include strengthening the major arteries in and out of the community, along with the regional connections and partnerships that contribute to healthy and vibrant living.
